This is a great read. I just plugged in my first drobo ever and before moving anything onto it I took one look and said "WTF, why does it show more capacity than it has?" I wanted to know what would happen if I went over, and this article answered that in complete detail. Drobo should probably just say on the cover of the manual in big red letters "DON'T EXCEED YOUR CAPACITY CALCULATOR CAPACITY." Everything else is self explanatory.

Great Advice! This is something I'm quickly learning in my transition to freelance editing. There are so many jobs I've come across that require complete concept-to-delivery services, services that you may not necessarily want to do, but need to do in order to better serve your clients.
Live events, still photography, and motion graphics are all services I've begun pitching to prospective clients.

I have been following your blog and I am inspired by your honesty and transparency. In this industry you need to be a jack-of-all trades and a master of a few. I struggle all the time of doing too many things and not really being really good in one thing, but I do get business in Web design, video production and media consulting.

Keep up the good work, and keep your editing as the main thing, but the key is to make revenue and to love what you do. I am fortunate to love what I do and make a decent living.

I was SO hoping this was a real article!!!! Extremely well done. I was drooling reading it.

Just last night I was saying," Why no dedicated editing iPad?" "Or, why no iFolio, an iPad that only plays videos & slideshows. Would make a great portfolio. $225 for 40gb and little else. Beats a laptop for presentations.

Thanks for your article, after reading so many websites about the technical side of things or 'how to run a business' articles, it's nice to read something a bit more personal as I'm in a similar predicament.

I've been working as a freelance editor for about 7 years now and while I'm in work at the moment, it's always from those same producers.

My friends and family have always told me to go beyond freelancing and setup shop myself, but it's the relationship side of things that has held me back. I'm looking into some sort of coaching or training myself, so I'll be following your progress with interest.

My question is if I hand an LTO to one of my network clients who does NOT have Cache-A will they be able to:

a.) see what;s on the tape and if so how and will is have the ICON catalog look above and
b.) do I need to use the internal SW to make the LTO/.tar files or can I use instead, say Z-datadump or WinZip or WinRara which are non-proprietary?

The Creative Spark database is still in constant development and at
least at this time is for in house use only. However, once we feel
it's perfected we may turn it into a product of its own down the road.

the first three minutes are "a whole lot of time"... Start watching this video at 3:13. (I already knew about shift-dragging, so after 5:39, still didn't get any new content... but the rest looks terrific. I look forward to watching the rest of the video. Patience pays off... I'm learning something at 6:35!
